High Hand Art Gallery is an artist-owned cooperative gallery located in the High Hand Nursery fruit shed on Taylor Road in Loomis, California. With about 30 artists from the Sierra Foothills, Placer County and greater Sacramento area we are highly selective in the acceptance process to assure the highest quality work in each media area, as well as assure a balance of media types creating an enjoyable gallery experience for all. When you visit our gallery, you will be meeting our artists as each of us staff the gallery approximately two days each month.
Wide Range of Media. The gallery is balanced with a substantial mix of media and art forms from A (Acrylic) to Z (ok, W for Wood as we have no Z), with every other possible media represented including Bronze castings, welded metal, jewelry, glass, found metal, encaustic wax, fabric art, paper, art cards, watercolor, oil, stone sculpture, and turned wood.
Refreshed bi-monthly. At the start of every other month, we have a “Re-Hang” wherein all art comes off the walls, some is rehung, other is replaced, new items come in and any new member’s art makes its debut. The days following Re-Hang are wonderful as it is an entirely new and fresh gallery each time.
The gallery opened in fall 2008, after multi-media artist Patricia Sokolowski hired High-Hand Nursery to landscape her yard. Patricia had placed some of her metal work around her yard. High-Hand owner Scott Paris saw the artwork and asked Patricia if she would like to sell her work at the nursery. He had a room he’d been using merely for storage that would make a great gallery space. And simple as that, the idea for High-Hand Gallery was born.
The “room” turned out to be in the historic fruit sheds in downtown Loomis. Once a fruit-packing plant that was responsible for much of the fresh fruit shipped east from California in the first half of the 20th century, the building now houses a variety of shops. The gallery is in the oldest section, which was built in 1901.
Over the years since starting, we have grown our artist membership to over thirty artists, improved our building, broadened our media types and become one of the magnet galleries of the greater Sacramento and Placer County areas.
How To Join
Many of our artists have been members of the co-op for its entire history, nonetheless we have a few openings each year for highly qualified artists. The success of our gallery depends completely on the participation of each and every artist member. Prospective new members submit samples of their work to be juried by the jury committee which meets monthly.
Prior to applying for jurying and membership, we ask you to download and review the membership requirements to determine that you are both willing and able to assume the responsibilities that are expected of all of our artists.
Jurying for potential new members is usually held the first Friday of every month. Contact the gallery at 916.259.4298 to set up an appointment.
